This is imported by the Folio Wine Group, which is Michael Mondavi’s wine business. 87 Points La Vendimia 2012 – Costco $11.99 I like this wine for a large group gathering because it will please the crowd while not breaking the bank. It is not terribly complex in the mouth and I think the finish is a little on the short side. It is an enjoyable wine with good balance, no flaws to speak of. The wine is loaded with black cherry and spice flavors. This wine is from the famous Horse Heaven Hills AVA in the state of Washington and produced by the Columbia Crest winery. 90 Points Horse Heaven Hills 2011 Merlot – Costco $10.99 It is a very fun winery to visit should you be in the area. The winery is located in the Russian River Valley near Healdsburg. The designation on the wine is California because the Pinot Gris comes from Clarksburg (33%), Russian River Valley (32%), Lodi (30%), and Monterey (5%). It is clean and refreshing and definitely one to stock in your cellar for that outdoor occasion. This is the perfect picnic, lunch, or aperitif wine. The flavors are enhanced with a nice mouth feel with just the right acidity. Lime, lemon, and tropical fruit are abundant. The aroma is enticing as it emerges from the glass. I am rating this 2013 vintage a notch above.

I previously reviewed and recommended the 2012 vintage of this wine. 87 Points J Vineyards California Pinot Gris 2013 – Costco $11.49, KL Wines $14.99 Think of it as a Swiss-Army-knife type of wine. This could well be your answer to summer steaks, ribs, fish or pasta. Dry but not astringent, it’s quite balanced between fruity and savory. Its low alcohol content (12.9%) allows it to tread lightly on the palate but doesn’t compromise the taste. Attractively bottled, Sofia has more of a full-mouth feel to it than most rosés. Review from Vintage Wine Taster Ray: Sourced from Monterey County grapes and named after his actress/director daughter Sofia, Francis Coppola’s rosé might just be the ice-breaker to get your steadfast red-or-white wine friends into a new world.
